When you go to watch a movie titled something like NUDIST COLONY OF THE DEAD, you pretty much have a good idea of what you are in for. Which I think is a good thing, I'm certain no one rented this puppy and was dissapointed and thought, "gee, that wasn't what I was expecting." On the other hand though, this flick was so much more.
Maybe not quite as cool as Troma's CANNIBAL THE MUSICAL or POULTRYGIEST, this one comes off as a horror/comedy/musical. The story revolves around the Sunny Buttocks Nudist Camp, which is shut down by Judge Rhinehole (played by horror icon Forrest J. Ackerman) and the local group of religious zealots. As a protest, the dejected nudists enter into a suicide pact and vow to come back for revenge. Sure enough, 5 years later, the colony is reopened as a campground and a group of kids arrive on a religious retreat. The nudist come back from the dead as zombies and the revenge (and the musical numbers) soon begin.

This flick was made back in 1991 with a astronomical budget of $35000, so you can't expect too much of the acting and effects, but they did a good job considering. Still, this only adds to the fun. This IS supposed to be a comedy, and so laughs, whether intentional or not, are the order of the day.

The music, while no where near the caliber of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW or CANNIBAL THE MUSICAL or even GREASE 2, is competent enough for a musical and pretty humorous itself. Fans of the Dr. Demento show may have even heard the theme song on his show.

This movie is still availible on VHS at AMAZON.COM:

But it is severly expensive. The best bet is to go straight to the Pirromount Pictures Website and pick up a newly remastered DVD with extras for $19.95.

I'm surprised they never made a sequel, well not too surprised. But it did go on to spawn a stage musical which did run for 4 months. Like I said, this is no ROCKY HORROR...
If you are an aspiring film maker, I seriously suggest checking out the Pirromount Pictures Website. Mark Pirro has been making low budget movies since 1981 and knows his stuff and enjoys sharing his wisdom.
